Detaching To Find God

Episode 3 April 15, 2025 00:29:50

Show Notes

Have you ever been in a conversation where the other person doesn't stop talking? It's tough to be in, especially when they ask you for something. When you spend time with Him, are you dedicating time, or are you in the middle of things and wanting to drop off your "shopping list"? Prayer and alone time with God are important. Jesus chose to meet Satan's temptation in the wilderness; He spent time alone in prayer before the crucifixion. Prayer is so vital that Jesus chose prayer before the two most significant historical events. Join us as we talk about the importance of prayer.

[00:00:13] Speaker A: Hey, welcome, everyone, to another episode of the Jonathan Project podcast, where iron is sharpening iron. And we take the inspiration for this show from Jonathan and his good friend David and future king to help men navigate the complex world around them. If you want me and Jason to come out to men's events, you have some kind of function going on, please reach out to us at the Jonathan Project podcastmail.com Again, the Jonathan Project podcastmail.com if you're looking for free resources, you can find one, a devotional that we created in the bios. That will be with the segments. So with that, we're going to kick off the show. Jason, it's good to see you. Another week, another podcast. [00:00:55] Speaker B: Hey, brother. I appreciate you being very flexible this weekend and pushing this for our listeners out there. It is Monday evening and this will be hot off the press when you listen to it in the morning. We both were extremely busy this weekend, mainly me and having to jump around. And Toby, I appreciate your grace more than you know. [00:01:13] Speaker A: No, no, it's, you know, it goes both ways. You know, you've had to be flexible. So as, again, iron, sharpening iron. So, yeah, I'm interested in this, in this topic this week. Yeah, it was, it came out of a good conversation that we had. So why don't you introduce it to the folks? [00:01:34] Speaker B: Well, first I want to give a shout out to Brian and let him know I'm praying for him and hang in there. You know, a lot of people when they say, what can I specifically pray for you? I will tell you right now, I just go, hey, you just mentioned my name to my best friend. He knows, he and I talk a lot. So with that being said, it's about alone time with our best friend being in the wilderness, right? And as I was looking in Luke, I'm studying that. And of course, you know, I've got a lot of questions and I read and I study and it came to. Actually, it starts in Luke 3 when it talks about John the Baptist being in the wilderness. And I thought that's. That's pretty unique. He went out where no one was, right, Gets out alone with God. And then if I take a look and I fast forward it a little bit, Jesus, when it starts, the temptation, he goes into the wilderness. And, you know, I thought about it from the lens of, well, Satan was out there, he's fasting, praying, and he attacks him at this weakened state. And then I thought about it for a second. I'm like, Jesus knows what's happened. He knows what's going to happen. Like, he's not surprised, right? So for the big battle, he fasted and he was alone. He was alone in the wilderness. And how often do we do that? How often do we get away? I'm just going to sit here and be quiet and listen. Right? Yeah. So that was. That's our topic. Yeah. [00:02:56] Speaker A: No, that's a good one. You know, and I think about it like, you know, detaching. Find God. Right. You know, and if we're honest, it's really a war for our attention is what I kind of thought about as I was putting together my notes and, you know, studying for this week's episode is, you know, if we could ask the audience a question that obviously they can't answer back. But when would be the last time that you were truly alone with God? You know, I'm not talking about when you're riding down the car, going, going to work or wherever you're going, listening to the radio, listen to worship music or in the gym. You know, I'm talking about no phone, no noise, no agenda. You're just on receive mode. You're just spending that time in his presence and letting your heart be filled. We get that example from Jesus where he would break away, he would leave his assignment and go and spend time to commune with his father. And, you know, we live in a world 24 7, as Jason said, like, we're right up against the 11th hour, so to speak, to get this episode to you, because there's so many other things on the plate all the time. There's social media, news, family, whatever, right? But at the end of the day, and this is why we really took this episode to heart, is like, you have to slow down and make sure that you're getting the right information. And that comes from Jesus, you know. [00:04:09] Speaker B: So, yeah, so think of it like this. And you and I were talking, there was TV show and this young girl was transported from the 30s into the 2000s, right? And she, almost 90 years later, she's transported and she's trying to blend in. And, you know, these kids are trying to help her. And she looks around, she goes, it's so busy. How do you guys ever stop playing? And that was a pearl of pearl to me. And I thought about as a Gen X person who spent a lot of time outdoors, you see kids now, they've got the earpod in or airpod, or always get it mixed up, some. Something, right? Like, and, you know, they're always listening to it. I thought about. Think of all the time we played outside Road Bikes, no music, just listening to the wind. Right. I thought about when I was a young boy or a young man, the agriculture department had this job. Colby, you go around cotton field, check bow wheel traps. Right? For those listeners who have never seen a 400 acre cotton field, it'll take you all day to walk it. But I recall being out there alone, just me and God, right? That's it. Just me and him, whatever I had read, whatever prayer I had going on, and just me, him, the rattlesnakes and the bugs, Right. But we don't get along, you know, it made me stop because in Luke 11, his disciples asked him one thing. They said, didn't. They didn't say, hey, teach us how to do miracles. They didn't say, hey, teach us how to, you know, create more bread. They said, teach us how to. Because they knew that was the center of everything he did. Right? [00:05:49] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:05:49] Speaker B: Get off by yourself, pray, spend that time, just listen. Yeah, I'm sure he had one on one conversation. [00:05:57] Speaker A: No, no, I think you're right. I think Jesus gives us a good example of something that's really powerful, that before you can be a help to someone else. I kind of think about when you're flying on the plane and they give you that speech, if the mask come down, make sure that you put your mask on before you help someone next to you. And why is that? Because if you pass out as well meaning as your attentions are to try to save your children or whoever's sitting next to you, then you're no good. And Jesus had to any of us that kind of take a foray and putting ourselves out into public ministry, if you would, so to speak. Kind of like with the podcast, it takes a bit of refreshing. Sometimes you have to kind of step away and make sure that if you're doing it right, in my opinion, that you're still aligned with God. And that's the same thing with our lives. We have to take these asthma's check to make sure that we're still on track. And yet you're not outside of his will, which is the most dangerous place to be. Because kind of like those animals on Discovery Planet, that's where Satan is just waiting to pick you off. So before you make a major decision, I like to say, and I love where it goes Back to mark 1:35, very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went to a solitary place and prayed. Starting your day, before you even get up and start going and doing anything else and say Saying, thank you, Jesus, you opened my eyes. Because so many people don't even get that every day. And starting in that kind of a place is a good way to kind of start your day. And, you know, Matthew 6:6 reminds us, but when you pray, go into a room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen, you need to isolate yourself because there's so much noise. And I know it's so tempting to grab that iPhone, whatever you got, and start swiping as soon as you open your eyes. But, you know, Jesus has given us that great template of how to interact with him and is spending some time with him and building that relationship. [00:07:42] Speaker B: You know, I. You and I both, we got. Got off work today. When you get done working out, when you start working out, whatever you're doing first is generally what you prioritize, Right. Really is you want your legs to grow squat harder, you know? [00:08:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:03] Speaker B: But you do. And when I think about, we're approaching Easter, right? We're approaching the crucifixion and the Resurrection. Also, as Christians, we focus a lot on the cross. I really think we should focus more on the empty temple, right? And that's super important because that's it. Easter, by the way, is my favorite holiday. Without it, we wouldn't have any other holiday. [00:08:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:26] Speaker B: At the Howard house, we're celebrating. [00:08:28] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:08:30] Speaker B: So as we focus on that and Jesus, he's called in, right? He tells his disciples, he's had the Lord, he's had his supper. He gets ready, he says, hey, we're going to go pray. Let's go pray in the garden, right? And he even tells his disciples, he tells them, you know, he says, I want you to wait here. I'm going to go over here. Even then, he wanted to be alone, right? In that prayer time is so important that super bowl of, you know, doesn't even come close to describing it. But the spiritual super bowl of all time is about to take place. And he says, I need some alone time to pray, think and talk, you know, I got it. Here you go. Lord, this is, you know, if this cup could pass and be great. But your will, right? That's what it says. [00:09:15] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:16] Speaker B: And he knows. He knows that even the two. The disciples that he's carried, Peter's going to the nine. He knows all this. He knows he's about to be alone, right? And not only is he about to be alone, but when he hangs on that cross with all of our sin, he's really going to be alone. Unlike us Americans, specifically, when we are in troubled times. Whatever you turn to, believe it or not, that's your first. That is your God. If it's hogging dogs ice cream, you're God, right? I've had a rough day. I've had a hard day. Let me get some. Let me get some ice cream or let me get a bottle of liquor, you know, whatever it is. Right? [00:09:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:55] Speaker B: Think about that. So Jesus is getting ready to have a hard day. And he goes to prayer. I got a. Since we won't do the leftovers, I got a little something for you. And I had never. I never read this. I read it, but it never dawned on me. So In Luke chapter 23, verse 61, this is where Peter has denied it, Right. Peter's in the midst of throngs, of the denial. And it's the last one. And it says. It says in 60, it says. And Peter said, man, I know not what thou sayest, King James force. And immediately, while he yet spake the cock crew. So the rooster goes off, right? I've had some. Got rid of them. But. And it says in verse 61, and the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. He looked at him. They had some eye contact. [00:10:58] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:10:58] Speaker B: No wonder he raced and beat John to the. He's like. Although John was faster. He was like, I gotta get there. Right. And what's interesting is this is the gospel a blue. Right? [00:11:11] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:13] Speaker B: So it's really Peter's words being recorded. You know, Peter doesn't record walking on the water. He doesn't record any of that other stuff in there. But he records this. That was traumatic. He made eye contact and then the rooster went off. He says he went out and he wept bitterly. Right. You know, when Jesus knew all this was unfolding and it's a disaster moment, like the hinges are coming off. [00:11:35] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:35] Speaker B: And he's like, I need to spend some time. I need to get out in the wild. I need to spend some time, me and God alone. And I don't think we do it. [00:11:43] Speaker A: No, I don't think we do either. But you know what I think about as I was thinking through this? There's other great examples of this, of men doing this in the Bible that can give us hope. Joshua in the tent, Exodus 33 and 11. It says, Moses finished the meeting with God and he returned to the camp. But as young a Joshua, son of nun, did not leave the tent. Now, we don't know what Joshua was doing in there, but we. I believe, you know, that he was sitting in stillness. He was watching this great mentor, Moses how he had this relationship where he would go and spend time with them and he was preparing himself. And why, I believe that's what happened, because he got tapped on the shoulder. He was the next man up and he had obviously been preparing himself. Even though we don't get a lot of it. Elijah and the whisper first king 19 tells us God wasn't in the wind. It wasn't an earthquake. It was a still, small voice. It's stillness is often where God speaks to us the most. And if you don't know, as Jesus says, his sheep will what, know his voice. And the only way you get to know someone's voice is through spending time with them. That's why a child can cry out and a mother instantly knows that cry because she knows that's her child, she can hear that, right? It's the same thing we need to understand when the Lord is speaking to us. Sometimes that's through other people. The most common way is, which is why you should read your Bible every day, is when you spend time in God's Word, the Holy Spirit will draw what is in that word and give you exactly what you need for your situation. It's amazing how that happens. But the bottom line point is, is if you don't spend time with him, you can't really get the guidance that you need to prepare for those fights that you might not even know are coming in your day to day life. [00:13:22] Speaker B: No, that's it. Look at this. In Daniel, in the book of Daniel. I love the book of Daniel, right? And it got ready that, you know, they did the, they did the royal decree. If you don't, if you don't, you know, anybody that prays worships anything other than the statue, you got to get in the lion's den, right? And it says immediately, it says, when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house, the windows opened in his chamber toward Jerusalem. He kneeled upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before God as he did as he'd done aforetime. He went and prayed. He knew, hey, I'm caught. This is it. Like I'm caught. But let's spend some time. He didn't go to his buddy and go, man, let me tell you how wrong the king just, you know how wrong he just did. He didn't commiserate. He didn't go down to local latte shop or whatever it was and do things like that. He went and prayed. He spent time. Yeah, right. And prayer is so important. And just getting out There. If you don't do this, and I've been asked this before, maybe we'll do an episode about discernment, right? Like, that's a big one. And when you see people, they go, okay, you want to know if God's speaking to you, but you never spend alone time with him. Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they never shut up? Don't. [00:14:42] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. We all have experienced that at some point. Yeah, absolutely. [00:14:46] Speaker B: Yeah, I had a conversation and I'm. You know, people ask questions and then they just talk right over you. You don't get a chance to answer. You like, this ain't much of a conversation. I'm sorry, the middle of my sentence interrupted the beginning of your second question. Let me finish. It's what you do. You know, the other night I went out, I read my Bible, and it was nighttime, and I went out there and I sat down on the back phone. No, nothing set up. Yeah, it's me and God, man. It is amazing how refreshing that is. [00:15:21] Speaker A: No, I agree with you. I think that it's something that I try to do, especially when I need or I feel like I'm going through something, or I feel God is. Maybe I've gotten a little distant from him. You know, I go and spend time in. In my closet, right? It's completely dark. It's probably the quietest place in my house. And I don't call out and go through a list of, like, he already knows what's going on. But if it's kind of to, you know, your point, Jason, If I'm always talking and that's the part of praying, if I'm always just going through my 711 checklist of what I need and I'm not being quiet and trying to see what is speaking into my heart, and then I therefore also know the difference between my thoughts and his, then you can find yourself, right? Like, just, you know, you're just chasing your tail like. Just like a dog, right? Like, you're just going around and around and around and you're not getting anywhere, you know? But that's the beauty of fostering that relationship, that when the wind starts to blow and things are going kind of sideways, that you can hear his voice and be like, okay, I know what I need to do, and I hear you. [00:16:25] Speaker B: If you don't get along and you don't spend time, you know, a lot of people go, well, how do I know when God is speaking? You don't ever shut up. You don't ever hear, Right? [00:16:35] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:37] Speaker B: And he's not some giant Santa Claus. You know, we always talk about. I'm trying to look up Philippians as we do this, but we always talk about how wise Solomon was. He asked for wisdom, and I have no doubt that David told him that. But in reality, as I've read Solomon, I've read, you know, Ecclesiastes, I've read Proverbs, I've kind of looked at his life. I think when God had asked him, said, what do you. What do you want? If he'd have just said, you choose, just sat there and been quiet. Maybe that's a good answer. Maybe in our lives, it's just God, what do you want? In my life? You choose the best. I was. I was listening to a sermon about when God knows what you want, he knows what you need before you ask, right? And it says, if you're, you know, he's not. You're not going to ask for a fish, and he's going to give you a scorpion. You're not going to ask for bread, he's going to give you a rock. Right? If your earthly father knows how to give good gifts, how much more your heavenly thought. Yeah, right. For things all the time. When I was a kid, I prayed for a Mustang gt. Right. It's probably a good thing I didn't get it. [00:17:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:48] Speaker B: But I'm still holding out. But it's, you know, God gives us the best. But we don't know that if we don't spend time with it. [00:17:58] Speaker A: No, no. And I think that there's, you know, if I can and will, you know, some of the practical things that kind of pop into my mind about, about all of this. Like, okay, it's great to say, you know, Cole, you're me to, you know, read my Bible and to have some silent time when it's. When it's prayer time. But, you know, that day in, day out practicality over there. And you know, James 1 and 5 says, if you lack wisdom, what? Ask God. You know, and solitude is when that wisdom starts to flow. If you don't know what's going on, you have a question, seek him out, find him, and he will provide the answer. You know, and it gives you that perspective. Romans 12 and 2 speaks of renewing our minds alone. Time with God can clear a foggy kind of vision and thought. How many times have we felt restless? Have we felt dejected? Have we felt you put a label on? But if you're not seeking out a time to go to the source of truth, the person that knows Tomorrow, then, yeah, you're right. You're gonna live in a fog, in a funk. Physical and spiritual renewal. Isaiah 40 and 31. But those who hope in Lord will renew their strength. There's something refreshing, as Jason alluded to a little bit earlier in the show, when you can just sit out and spend time with God, that's a really practical thing. It's amazing how your blood pressure drops. It's amazing how the headache will start to clear. You know, it's amazing how you can feel a little bit of strength, but if you again, don't seek him, he can't help you, right? [00:19:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:19:21] Speaker A: And then the last one that kind of just comes to my mind, and this really is a one that's kind of tough, is conviction and correction. As much as you might not want to seek out your father, so to speak, think about a kid that gets caught in a cookie jar, you're not going to go tell on yourself. There is. There is something. There's a maturity, there's a growth to this as believers, as men. If you want to be the person that's leading, you have to stand up and hold yourself accountable. Because there's a whole lot of people that don't even know what accountability is. And it's act like a poison. You know, Psalms 20:39, 23, 24 says, search me, oh God, and lead me in everlasting in a way that's everlasting. Excuse me. So, you know, bottom line, there's some practical things that you can do every single day that helps foster this. But again, that first step, as I always say, is the hardest. But it is so worth it to be able to gain intimacy with God and how him actually move in your life and feel that is real. [00:20:17] Speaker B: You know, you're right, you hit the nail on something. And I'm. You got me flipping back over here. But in Philippians, it talks about being anxious for nothing. It says, be careful for nothing. But in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. You know, we ask and we ask and we ask. And you know, prayer is kind of like when Jesus described it. He says, hey, think of it like this. When a neighbor is asleep and the guy comes and knocks on the door and he says, hey, sometimes he answers the prayer just because the guy is knocking on the door, right? And I thought about how they live and they live in those one little room homes. And that guy would have to get up, you know, get over his family, the animals. And he's like, yeah, what do you want, like a cup of flour? Sure. Got it right. But God's not that way because he looks for opportunities to do good and to help. But you also got to look at it like this. And we go, well, I know what I need. I need God to give it. Wait a second. You may be mature in the world size, but you might be a child in Christ. And if. Sometimes we keep asking. It's like when my kids go, well, I want this for Christmas, and I want this for Christmas. And I listen, because eventually we'll get down to, what do they really want, right? Do they really want. And that's where it comes down. That's why prayer and spending time is important. What do I really want? And it's so important. But you talked about, and I'm going to use the Google later Bible Gateway when it talks about, you said, spending time for that conviction. David wrote in the psalms in Psalm 51. And it came to mind. But, you know, I had to do the real quick lookup. It says, purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean, and wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow, and make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which thou has broken may rejoice. And it goes in. This is. There is some. You know, where it talks about. It's a prophecy of Christ when he talks about, hide thou face my sins and blot out all my. No, but he goes in there and David says, clean me with this. All right, look here. Those of you that knew about Mercurochrome growing up, or just straight rubbing alcohol on a skinned knee, for those of us who played outdoors, skin knees occurred all the time. And it didn't matter how much somebody blow on the cut or whatever, it hurt. And hyssop was the same way, but it was what was required to be clean. And David had such a close relationship with God, he says, hey, man, get the rubbing alcohol and get the sponge and let's get this thing cleaned out. We can get on with it, right? And you think about it. It's what has to happen. And I don't know why I got this thought in my head, but, Colby, did you ever get stung with a bee and they're like, put some chewing tobacco on it? [00:23:07] Speaker A: No, ours was. I did get stunned because I was like, I think a lot of little boys in that time, we see a wasp nest as an opportunity to test your bravery, like throwing rocks or. My best. The smartest idea was the water hose because it would wet the wings and they Couldn't fly and attack you unless that one got you. But anywho, we had weeping willow trees in the front yard. A lot of people might not know this, but, like, the chemical compound for aspirin is in the willow. And so they would do, like, this country remedy stuff. And, you know. But you took me back with the. That devil's bit called Mercuricrome. Like, that is pure liquid pain. So anyways, go ahead. [00:23:48] Speaker B: And it was like, all right, let's put this on there to get it clean, because I don't want you. David. David said, I want to be right with you. Right. If he didn't have a relationship, he'd have hid that. You know, he'd have continued it. Continued and continued. And even when he did have sin and he was confronted with it, he wept bitterly. You know, being alone in prayer, like, that's. That's it, right? Yeah, you've got to be there. You gotta. You have to listen. You gotta spend alone time. [00:24:20] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:20] Speaker B: Somebody. I was talking to somebody, and it was like, well, how do you know when God speaks to you? And I'm like, well, first it goes through the big filter, right? [00:24:27] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:28] Speaker B: I'm loving God with all my heart, mind and soul. And is this. Is anything that's kind of coming up, does it contradict it? Right? Is it fruit of the spirit sort of deal? But a lot of times, God answers little prayers, just little things me and him been talking about. I asked questions. I'm like, well, you know, I don't know. You like that car? I like that car. You find an extra one somewhere, Lord, I'll take it. Or, you know, just simple things. Just whatever, and it'll. It'll be there. The other day, I was praying. I said, you know, Lord, I sure could use some strength. And a lot's going on in this world, you know, really appreciate it. And you got any encouragement, I'll take it. Had three phone calls before I got to work. Three folks. Hey, man, somehow you just on my mind. So that's. That's an amazing coincidence. Right? Thing. [00:25:17] Speaker A: It's an absolutely great thing, but, you know, I want to leave. I guess my final thoughts here as we're nearing the commute time, so to speak. You know, sometimes this is going to feel dry, you know, and me and Jason have these honest conversations. It's not. The sun's always shining, you know, and, you know, puppy dogs running around. Like, when you spend this time with God, it's going to, you know, be the. Those times that it's just Kind of dry. But the most important thing is keep showing up because God's not going to meet your needs based off your feelings. He gets it. It hurts. If you didn't hear the episode we did about Job, you should probably go back and listen to that. Or just read and study even more importantly on your own. The story of Job, it's not touchy feely, but God is still there. He understands. But he's going to meet your needs based off of faithfulness. And that's just being consistent. You know, I would tell you the morning whether you're doing PT as good army folks do. You start your day off with that. Start your day off spiritually as well. 15 minutes. If you can't do 15, do 5, do 10. Whatever you can do to start building a habit. Get your Bible open journal. Because I put that in my notes. What Jason does, because it's good to remind yourself that's why the Israelites built little rocks and things they were personally told to tell their children, because remembering something helps build that faithfulness. Designate a place. Maybe it's the car as you're driving in, but don't put the radio on. Just be in silence and try not to yell at the person cutting you off. But try to be focused on where you can meet Jesus. Have that tenth of meeting where Moses would go and meet. There's a reason, right? A place to meet him. Silence the noise, no phones, no emails. Don't try to manage the kids. Whatever else is going on. Just take your scripture and you know that silence, right? Talk and then listen, you know, don't try to over complicate your prayers. He knows, like I, I don't need to do the 711 kind of list. Just be honest, bold prayers like Lord, this sucks right now, what I'm going through. Yeah, you know, he can take it, I promise. And then just stay consistent, give yourself grace and continue to grow. That's kind of my final wrap up, Jason. [00:27:26] Speaker B: No, you said something is a pearl of wisdom right there. Keep it simple, right? Prayer is simple. You know, Colby, you and I have been best of friends for a long time. I don't need a 40 minute speech for, you know, if you call and go, oh, Jason, you know, the, you know, whatever the ginger headed wisdom one or whatever, which, you know, I don't need that friends. You call, you go, hey man, let me talk to you. Or hey, you got five bucks? Whatever, right? Like it's simple, it's simple. And I think we keep them, keep prayers simple. Just spend time and listen you know, sometimes I'll walk outside at night because it's quiet. Right. Just me, God, the stars, simple little prayer and spend some time listening. That's it. So appreciate you doing this. I'll tell you. [00:28:23] Speaker A: No. Yeah. So it's another great episode. Again, we're human beings and there's times where again, even for us, it's not always sunshine and roses.
