Why Christianity is Hated

Episode 4 July 08, 2025 00:30:50

Show Notes

Why is Christianity so unpopular? Let's examine how we understand ourselves, specifically our self-concept. This construct is fed from our introspection and social perception. Unlike the filtered feedback from our social media, Scripture offers a deeper introspection that cuts to our heart like a "two-edged sword" and reveals that "all things are bare unto Him." Jesus challenges our introspection, causing us to examine who we are in His light. Join us as we explore how being a Christian can be a challenge in today's world.

It's about two minutes a day, but it will help you understand how to incorporate the goodness and wisdom of the Bible into your life as a man, the father, business owner, wherever you may be. So please check that out in all our links. Jason, welcome to yet another episode. Brother, how you doing? [00:01:02] Speaker B: No, all is good. I will say the devotional is free of advertising, so don't feel like you're going to get suckered into that. It is two minutes a day. It's two minutes of time devoted to God, looking at his scripture and hopefully it's very helpful to, to a listener out there. Right. How's it going? How was your, how was your day yesterday? How was the Fourth of July? [00:01:22] Speaker A: Well, I think at least where I live in, in the central florid area was. It's been raining pretty much since Thursday, 4th of July got flooded out. There were some, I don't know if they're brave or foolish because this part of the world where I live is like the lightning capital of the US or at least in the top two. And they were out there like trying and I'm like, I don't know how fireworks, water, lightning mix, but I'm sure this is gonna be interesting about two seconds. But it faded away quickly as I got a swamp out in the front yard. All this water. But yeah, man, how was yours? [00:01:56] Speaker B: Well, it was good. We had all the family over and so we spent a couple of days kind of prepping for that. It was really nice, kind of low key. We even got out and decided to have foot races in the yard, which is, which is awesome. And it's very comical when adults get out there and do that as well as kids. And of course my youngest who is man, he is all gas, right? No break, all gas. And he decided to, for us to race. And I was like, so we kind of run around a little bit and you know, I got a bum leg. And well, I said, I'll tell you what, I'll give it what I got. [00:02:37] Speaker A: He's like, I'll show you what you got. [00:02:38] Speaker B: I'll show you what you got. Yeah, I'll show you what you got. A slick. You haven't, you haven't, you haven't ran in quite a while and especially after some injuries and needless to say, I was, it was going well until it wasn't. So one pulled muscle and I'm like, oh, my gosh. Yeah. I think at some point when you demand so much from your body over the years, some one day it's going to look at you and go, you know what? I've had all of you I want. [00:03:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to give to you exactly what, what you think you got. I'm going to show you just how lacking you are now. [00:03:14] Speaker B: It mutinied on me. It mutinied on me. [00:03:16] Speaker A: I love it. [00:03:17] Speaker B: So I'll go back to doing things in one spot. You know, deadlifting, things like that. [00:03:23] Speaker A: We slow it down a bit. [00:03:24] Speaker B: Dips, things like that. I did, I did dips the other day. I like those. I'll stick with that. [00:03:30] Speaker A: There you go. [00:03:31] Speaker B: But that was, that was. [00:03:32] Speaker A: It sounds like it was a good time. If anything, it was a good family time and making some memories, which is, is always awesome, you know. So to, to the show for today. You did tee up before we got into this holiday season and took some breaks and time away. You did bring up a really good topic and it's one that me and you've talked about quite a few times. So why don't you let the folks know what we're gonna hit them with today? [00:03:57] Speaker B: So you and I were talking last week and we were like, why is Christianity so hated, right? And is as you and I were kind of talking and I was talking about the, the concept of, or the construct of self concept. So self concept has two optics at which the individual says, hey, who am I? Right? Like, what is my, what is my value? What is my height? Where am I right? It kind of gives you that measurement of where you are. And one is an internal self reflection, right? And then the other is, is your external. Okay, am I, what do other people believe I am? What does society tell me that I am? And you know, as you and I have alluded to today's society with social media, you get a lot of feedback. It's not like back in, you know, the older days, as my kids call it, the olden days. Dad, you know, when you were, when you were young, when you used to have to ride a horse and wagon. And he goes, it's People, people gave you feedback face to face, right. Or in a form of a letter or in the form of a report card or something like that. Today everybody gets an opinion. A lot of high opinion, low commitment, people shouting. But so you have those two optics and I think, you know, like for today's society everybody wants to know they're okay. Well my social media account says this and you know, I have this self image that I have to protect out there. But I think when it comes to the Bible, when it comes to Christianity, it doesn't affect the external optic, it affects the self perspective. Right. As the book of Hebrews says in 4:12 it says the Bible's like a two edged sword. So two edged sword historically. And there's a lot to draw from that. That's a deep cut. But it also says in 4:13 it talks about things are naked before God, there's nowhere to hide. And I think that's unique inside of Christianity. When I hear people tell me that it's one thing to argue with your external optic, but it's a completely different story when your internal optic is telling you something different. Like hey, unfortunately you're a sinner and you're, you're not, you're. When it says sin it means missing the mark. And I've kind of taken a, an interesting take on it because it does the pathway to heaven. Jesus is the one way. Right. And all Satan has to do is like threading a needle. If you've ever tried to thread a needle, it gets harder when you get older because. Cause it's hard to see, but it's just a little bit off. Just a little bit off. That's all he's got to do. So I think for in our discussion it's very uncomfortable. As you've pointed out, some people's religion can make some other folks demons itch. Right? [00:06:48] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. No, my, my grandmother was famous for that line. She was like, you know, you can walk in a room and you can just make someone's demons itch. And she was just meaning like, you know, you, you can be so full of the Holy Spirit and carry that you just turn people off. I think think to that point my kind of, my thought is, is that, you know, back to what the king has said, Jesus said it plainly, if the world hates you, remember it hated me first. And here we are 2000 years later and we're still trying to figure out how we live for him without just turning people off by showing up. Now I get it. I'll be the first to admit that there are people who take the title of Christian right and they do not apply the teachings of Christianity and namely Jesus and follow his example in their everyday life. And there are people have done some absolutely horrible things. Here's where I have an issue and what confuses me, Jason, is that other religions, they. They have a lot of people that take those titles and do absolutely horrible things. Me and you have spent some time in different parts of the world, around the world, with different religions, and I have seen what they point back to, Christianity, hypocrisy. I have seen how those societies and those people live. When, like I gave you the example, like at the Olympics last year, everyone remembered that the Last Supper where you had drag queens and all kinds of assortment of immorality going on, making fun of Christianity, I just point out the hypocrisy. If that was another religion and we can name some, but I'm not, it would have been. The city would have been on fire, people would have been killed. So I come to the conclusion, and this is what reinforces me, and I think this is the first point for the fellows and everyone listening today, is you need to understand that the truth is a mirror. And a lot of people don't like looking into the mirror. They're a lot more comfortable telling the world what they are, how they are via social media, the Internet nowadays. But the truth, like Jason's point is you can't run from it. You can't run from those quiet moments when the Holy Spirit is like, you know what you just did, what you said, how you're living is not good. And people don't like that. And that's the problem they have with Christianity and Christians who are following Jesus example. [00:09:02] Speaker B: But yeah, No, I thought you had a follow on. I'm sorry, that's. Well, you know. So you said some pretty key things, right? Number one, we as Christians, there's a lot of people who claim to be Christians who honestly, who are not, if just look at the statistics, I'm not judging anybody, right? I'm just going to call out the fruit of the statistics. 64% of America say they are, but only 6% hold a biblical worldview. That means that when you ride or you polish your car up like a Christian, right, you put the Christian stickers on there. But when the rubber meets the road, only 6% drive like those stickers, right? They drive the rest of them of that 64%. So the 94% of those drive like Ricky Bobby. Okay, we'll just put that in plain English. But in Hebrews 4:13, like we're talking to, it says, neither is any creature that is not manifest in his sight, but all things are naked and open unto his eyes. Now, you said something. You got to look in the mirror when you have an encounter with Jesus Christ, just like Paul did on that road to Damascus. And we talk about it and you know, Paul's response, as great a learning as he was, was, what do you want me to do, Lord? But you have that mirror and you think about it. And when something is wrong, right, let's say you have a stain on your T shirt, right? Like I wear plain T shirts. But let's say I've got this big stain on here. I want to be around other people with stains on their shirt. I do. So I don't feel left out. I don't feel excluded. And especially if I'm like, man, I don't want to go back and change. Christianity tells you, the Bible tells you. An encounter with Jesus Christ tells you that, hey, this is what, you've got some stains, but I'm going to clean them. I think sometimes as Christians and we, we have a fault. Let's, let's be candid. Christians are not perfect. We're a bunch of imperfect people serving a perfect God. We forget that the gospel is not always, it's not always pointing out those stains. Think about it. You're in a crowd with somebody and that person's wearing what they think's their best outfit, and it's got whatever ketchup stains on it or mustard stains or they got a booger in their nose, right? They're missing the mark. But the gospel says, hey, this is Jesus Christ. Rose again for your sins. Died and rose again. Your sins can be forgiven. We've got the ultimate washing machine and everybody knows they're a sinner. I think sometimes we enjoy that external optic to go, well, it's okay to be a sinner. People do, right? It's okay to whatever. Do, you know, think of anything. It's okay to have a booger in your nose. Everybody's got boogers in their nose. No, let's get that cleaned out. And so I think that it is. It's easy. We see that hypocrisy. And I think Christianity, hypocrisy is so distasteful because your heart of hearts knows what the true standard is, you know. [00:12:03] Speaker A: No, you're right. And I think that, you know, some of those common arguments, you talk about one of them right there out of the gate that, you know, hypocrisy is hard for people to let that go, especially in the west where Christianity is one of the more dominant and I would say even more broadly accepted for a long period of time, religions that when you see, you know, these prominent pastors or you see what the scandal that was going on within the Catholic Church, you see different examples and people point there like, ha, you see, that is what I'm saying. Like those, those Christians say one thing and they do something else. But there's two problems with, with that first little argument against Christianity and Hypocrisy is that 1 Romans 3 and 23 says, we have all sinned. To Jason's point, we missed the mark, all of us. And then Satan weaponizes, you know, the apocryphal Christians who then stand on pride and say, hey, you, hasn't sin cast the first stone? And they like to throw out certain verses and different things versus, you know, dealing with the sin in their lives to tarnish Christ's name. And then the other point of it is, is people tend to forget how apocryphal see that they have in their own lives. Right. They're quick to point out, and it's this, it's probably some deep psychological thing where people like to, you know, one reason crime dramas are so popular, right? Because it allows you to judge, it allows you to compare and say, well, I'm not out here hacking up people. I'm pretty good. Or, you know, I like that person, so I'm pretty good. But here's the thing. When you're dealing with the perfect God and a golden standard, just saying that I'm a good person and comparing yourself to a person that's on death row, it's not going to cut it because he went to the cross for all of us. Right? And I think that her personal hurt, that's, that's another one, right? [00:13:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:51] Speaker A: I was wounded by some person and they call themselves a Christian and they did something wrong. Well, you know what, here's the first point. Number one, people have bad days. And anytime you're in a business of people, which everything on this planet deals with people, you're going to have some people that might hurt you. That's not just the exclusive thing with Christianity. I mean, every religion has that. I mean, it doesn't invalidate Christ. You can't throw out the baby in the bathwater kind of, kind of a serial. He is not the sum of our failures. He came for our failures. And I think sometimes people get that twisted that Jesus is like you. No, he was the Creator. We are created. You know, Romans 6, 6. Our old self was cruc with them. And then the last one, I could go church examples. One, we talk about the Catholic Church scandal. You know, there's other pastors that have done horrible things. These are the shepherds of flock and they have done something wrong. Yeah, Westboro Baptist, right. Very, very common. The way that they're very militant in the way that they portray the world, the Christian worldview. But that's not Jesus. Again, you have to see what he represented when Jesus was being accused by the Pharisees. And this is a thing that I think, guys are put into your kit bag. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to say nothing. Jesus don't need you defending him. You don't need to get on social media and talk crazy to people, get signs, tell everybody they're going to hell. Jesus didn't run around doing that. And he's the only one, oh, by the way, that can send someone to hell. Yeah. So you might want to calm down with telling how many people are going to go to hell. Because it's only by his grace that we get to heaven. [00:15:23] Speaker B: So, yeah, I don't get to stand up in court. It only says there's only one advocate. Right. There's one accuser, one advocate. Neither one of those have my name on them. I think, you know, when people, when you compare the hypocrisy, there's a great story, and it's throughout the Gospels. Jesus goes into the synagogue and there's a. There's a demon in there. And he goes, oh, man, what are you doing here? My time's not yet come. How long do you think that demon was setting in? That guy with the demon was sitting in the synagogue. He was there long time. It wasn't like, oh, I'm just going to show up today. No, he was there because he had. [00:15:59] Speaker A: Satan goes to church every Sunday, man. [00:16:01] Speaker B: He sure does. [00:16:02] Speaker A: Every Sunday, right? [00:16:04] Speaker B: And you know, Satan will tell you, we all sin. I think it's pretty interesting. We shifted years ago to the everybody gets a trophy generation. Right? So we diluted. We diluted the concept of winning. We diluted the concept of literally the top tier. We diluted the concept of. With that what Right. Looks like. Think of it like this. When we take a test in school, we go, how many people missed this question? When you look at the psychology of learning, when you examine a test, you go, how much of the class missed these questions? And then you have to go back and go, was this material covered? Was the test? Was the question answered or asked correctly? And so forth. And we as students or whatever, we hope that it's so many people miss the mark on that test that the teacher throws it out. Except the deal is God's not going to throw it out. That's the truth, right? And I think when we have that self concept, and then the Bible tells us there's a great little verse here in Romans 12, 3, but when you look at it, there is a way. There is a way. But we don't like that. We don't enjoy going, oh, yeah, man, I need a savior. Let's see, you're 12, three. I got it marked right here. To every man that is among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to, but to think soberly according to God. God hath dealt to every man his measure of faith. We as Christians, we like to put other people down or well, let me rephrase that. Some people do and it makes us feel better. That's not what God calls us to do. It's not what Paul says in the book of Romans. Because when we do that, we just fan that fuel of hypocrisy. I go back to just spread the gospel, right? We all know we've got problems. Jesus Christ died for your sins, so those can be removed. When people ask you, when people ask me, well, do you think I'm doing wrong? Do you think I'm doing wrong? My concept back is pretty simple. Do you think you're doing wrong? I mean, is it. [00:18:05] Speaker A: Yeah, people know, right? Yeah, you know, people absolutely know. And I think a lot of it, it boils down to what I think about is as a Christian, right? And now, you know, specifically talking to guys because you're supposed to be the point and the leader. And a lot of this silliness that goes on. As far as the Christian response to hate, you should already know that you're going to be hated. And what's understood doesn't need to be explained. We're teeing it up. And if you haven't go back and read what Jesus said. And it was the opening thing, they hated him first. So therefore, if you follow him, you're going to be hated. You should know that. But we're called to respond to love and grace. So caving in for the world's approval, that's strike number one. And you know, silence can be worse than even saying something sometimes when you again deny him, right? And we've talked about this before with Peter well, you can do the same thing, you know, in a spiritual battle, because we are in one. And that's the reason why Christianity and Christians and your family and the values that you hold, if you are holding them, are under attack because you're in a fight. And humility in the middle of a fight is cowardice. This, it's fear. And the Bible says that we're not supposed to be fearful. So that's, that's, that's thing number one. Galatians 1 and 10 says, and now I'm seeking the approval of man or God. Guys, you have to ask yourself if you're allowing people to sit there and make jokes and to bash it in your sphere, because, again, that's the reason why God put men in different places in the world. I can't be in the advertisement firm that's going to make this new ad and they're going to make fun of Christians. I can't be in Hollywood. But there are people out there that are, and they are followers, but they are being silent, and you can't do that. The story of Stephen. I talked about this last week. Go back and listen to Acts 6, 7. He stood boldly and he died. I'm not saying that you have to fall on your sword. You have to go out and do something crazy and put yourself or your family in harm's way. But you do need to be able to stand as boldly as he did. And he was hitting people with the mirror of truth. And he got to the point where they absolutely just didn't like what he had to say. And. And they took his life responding with hate or anger. My goodness, we could probably do five episodes on this. And we've talked about this a lot, but there are so many people on social media, they call themselves Christians on Sundays and then they run right out of the parking lot. And before they get out, they've posted something, they've texted something, they tweeted something, and you look like the world. We get so caught up, especially in the west, with this whole political atmosphere, with this cultural war that's going on and we are called to be the salmon and swimming upstream. You got to look a little different because no one can hear you if you're just like the noise that they see on the news and everywhere else. So we have. Again, that's one of those little checks. First Peter 3, 9. Do not repay evil with evil. And I get it. It can be absolutely hard when someone's calling you bigoted as a Christian, when someone's saying you're offensive. When people are calling you outside of your God given name, it's hard not to want to respond. I get that. But again, like I said, one of the strongest things you can do sometimes is keep your lips together and not say something, you know, and say, hey, you know, live a life that's different. They'll say, well, people start taking notice. It's funny how they're like, man, you, you don't get involved in those discussions at work. No, I don't. Here's why. Because I know the ending. I know who wins. I know who's sovereign. I know who puts kings into place. It's not me. As much as high mighty. We think we're in the West. Well, I voted. Well, that doesn't matter really. The Bible says God did it. There's, there's all of that anger off a mass fear and pride. Jesus never uses rage as a witness. He didn't go around even when he caught people in adultery, even when he met a Samaritan woman that had multiple men as partners. He never used rage. And we got to let that go. Purify your speech. Don't let social media define your witness. You know, go ahead, Jason. [00:21:50] Speaker B: No, you know, Jesus is accounted for for rage for one time. And I think that's super important because it tells where his focus was. Right? His focus. He's very clear. God called him for one purpose. He says, hey, I'm here for this one purpose, my time. He constantly refers to it as my time. And it's when he went into the temple and they were selling, they were exchanging money and selling doves. And what that was for listeners out there that don't, don't grasp this or didn't know this is the people would show up with their, with their sacrifice. Now, that sacrifice had to be perfect. So to do that, think about it. If you had to choose an animal that had to be perfect, you guard it. You guard it. You keep it with you. You keep it. It sleeps with you, you do. You take above and beyond precaution to make sure this animal is not hurt. There's no blemish. There's no scratch. It's never infected. There's nothing. Because this is going to be the sacrifice that covers your sin. And then they would travel all this way to the temple and, and there would be a corrupt person of the priesthood who would say, man, that's not, that one's just not good. I've got this blemish here. Go on outside, and I want you to buy one from the stable. And then they would overcharge them for it for forgiveness of sin. And Jesus, who's coming to redeem us of our sins, looks down and says, you are making a profit, you are corrupting. A very serious topic. And he lost his. He didn't lose his temper, but he was very angry. Jesus doesn't lose anything. And I think that's. Yeah, when we look at our anger over things like that's, that's something worth being angry about, right? Are we, are we corrupting the message of salvation? You know, you said something earlier about salmon swimming upstream and it made me think of Romans and I was kind of digging it up in Romans chapter one, verses 20 through 28. And I won't read them all, but it says here basically that people change the creation for the Creator. They superimposed it, right? And so people could decide to go their own way. And so God gives them up at some point. God says, okay, you're gonna go. He says he gives them up to uncleanliness through the lust of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. They changed the truth of God into a lie and worship and serve the creature more than the Creator. And so we know that psychologically, like I think it was Patty Hearst, I always get it wrong, but she was the lady who was kidnapped to be the bank robber. And she goes, oh no, I was going along to get along, right? She was kidnapped by this bank robbing group. And then somebody's like, no, you're actively participating. So that's where a lot the psychological downfall. Well then if you take this and you go over to second Timothy, chapter three and you want to know why Christianity is not very popular, Think of it like this. In the last days, men shall be lovers of their own selves. The Bible tells us to love others. So you're against the stream right there. Boasters and proud. And God calls us to be humble. As a matter of fact, in Romans 12:3 it says, Think of yourself a little bit more soberly. I'm not going to put myself up on a pedestal. Let's draw men under Christ. Boasters, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce dispensers of those that are good, right? They're traitors, heady minded, lovers of pleasures, more than lovers of God. If you are a Christian, you are the opposite of all those things. And you are literally by your livelihood. If you're a true Christian, you are examining, you are representing Christ, which is against all the things that people right here are becoming right? Like you change their perception. [00:25:47] Speaker A: So I'll sum up my. My last little notes as kind of final point as we're getting close to you guys getting to the parking lot. So what is the right response? You got to stay firm, but stay gentle first. Peter 3 and 15 says, always be ready. Ready to give a reason with gentleness and respect. Civility, encourage our enemy. Sometimes saying nothing like Jesus did is the right thing to do. Gotta remember that out there. John 18:33, 38. Jesus falsely accused, but was reigned silent. Silence is not weakness, is strength under control in the right circumstances. Be forgiving like Christ. Ephesians 4, 32. Be kind, forgiving one another. Luke 23:34. For Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. You know, the world is acting in a state of blindness. They're lost. They don't understand. Now again, you know, you have to pick and choose how you engage with people. And got to be smart. They're not mocking you, they're mocking the truth. And really it's the spirit that's controlling them that is having an issue. What you're saying, you know, we wrestle not against flesh and blood, Ephesians 6 and 17, and see others as image bearers. Remember, everyone is created in the image of God, not the image of Christianity. Right? The image of God, Jesus. Right? They're created in that image. They have value, they have have worth. And they might be lost, you know, with the tongue we can curse humans and make them who have been made in God's likeness. James 3 and 9. You know, another thing I will say is, you know, you can't be a bold witness for God. And we say this so often on the show, but you have to be ready to withdraw like Jesus did. Pray before you go out into the world because you will be encountered, you will be tested. [00:27:20] Speaker B: Right? [00:27:20] Speaker A: Moses spoke to God face to face in the ten of meeting David. Psalm 63:1. Earnestly I seek you in a dry and weary land. You have to seek out God. You have to find him and spend that time with him, making solitude with God non negotiable. Before you start your day, that is putting on your kit, that is putting on your arm, we're ready to go battle and help yourself. And lastly, you know, you're not crazy if you're feeling the pressure out there. How do I really say something? How do I respond? But you can't seek comfort. You can't Shut down and be silent. You have to seek him and stand firm and change those things around you. Pull people aside with Jones, like, hey, man, that joke you made today at lunch, it was pretty bad, and here's why. Right? Or whatever the case may be, be cold, be bold, be kind, and stay planted in your scripture. And remember, the world's going to mock your faith, but heaven stands in the plot every time you do the right thing. Jason, that's all I got. [00:28:07] Speaker B: No, those are. Those are excellent, I guess, for. For closing thoughts. Think of it like this. I can't defend the past. I can't defend what other people do. That's not my job. My job is to share the gospel, which is there is forgiveness. I'm not changing. I'm not changing the standard of the test so that we all feel better. I'm not. I can't. Right. If you. If you are. But I'm also. Just. Here it is. This is the standard. We didn't meet it. You didn't meet it. I didn't meet it. If. If you really want to do some exploration and some humble thoughts, look at first Corinthians. The church at Corinth was horrible, right? But at some point, and then if you look in 6:11, 1 Corinthians 6:11, and Paul calls out, hey. He goes, hey, look, these people are not going to inherit the kingdom of God. And before he lets anybody become high and mighty and develop that downward reflection of another human, he goes, hey. And such were some of you. We all took rank as sinners and we did. Right. I'm not changing it. I'm not going to say, hey, God accepts X, Y or Z or whatever. What he accepts is being washed in the blood of Christ. Yeah, let's keep the eye on the prize and move forward. I like. I like where you're at. We're not. We're not condoning things. I'm just saying keep the eye on the prize. Keep steering towards that. The northern direction. Sure. So that's it, brother.
