By the time the listeners hear this, the super bowl for all those followers of Jesus will have already occurred. That is Resurrection Sunday, also known as Easter Sunday. And we're excited. So how you doing?
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Oh, man, we're doing good here at the Howard household. We're gearing up today. You know, it is, my wife's got things going. She's getting ready to do a bunch of cooking for Easter dinner. So ahead of time. Right. So it's, it's exciting times here. How's everything going your way?
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Same thing. You know, we're, we're leaning into it. You know, we're, we're, it's always the debate this year, the last couple years, do we go to the sunrise service tomorrow, which is when you got little kids, that's, that's a tall order and I always try to fight that one.
[00:01:52] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:53] Speaker A: Or do you go with all of our, our Easter friends that show up occasionally? Yeah, and we'll, which is good. It's great. It's better than not showing up, but either way it's, it's an event for dad here.
[00:02:06] Speaker B: Absolutely. Well, I gotta, I gotta tell you about this event. So we go eat dinner last night. You know, my daughter's in town and so my son's off, you know, spending the night with a friend. So we go eat dinner and we drive down this two lane country road here, and there are two loose free range chickens in this wheat field or in this field over here. Right. And you see where this is going and it's like there is no house around. And so I'M like, oh, I see their Starland Nav candidates as well. But that only lasted about half the ride. So on the way back, yours truly was out there in the dark, looking in this field, while I had two coaches on the side of the road going, I think you're in the wrong spot. And I'm like, I know I'm in the wrong spot.
[00:02:59] Speaker A: Yeah, I should be in the truck.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: Yeah, I should be in the truck. We didn't find them, but there I was out there in the flashlight, you know, looking.
[00:03:06] Speaker A: Something tells me, you know, you kind of just. You were looking.
[00:03:11] Speaker B: I was looking. I was looking. Don't you know our greatest fan will listen to this.
[00:03:15] Speaker A: Was he. Was he greatest fan? Send me an email, because I don't think he was. I'm gonna throw him under the bus for you. All right, so what are we talking about there?
[00:03:26] Speaker B: So it is Resurrection Sundays right around the corner. And I think that's something we should focus on. You know, we talk so much about the cross and Jesus dying on the cross. Here's a giant news flash. We all are going to die, right? And people died on the cross. It was a horrific form of. It separates Jesus. As Jesus came completely sinless, died on the cross, but rose again, right? Like, he died first sins, and then rose again. And so, you know, I think that's something we don't think about. You know, we don't think about the resurrection piece of it. So I love to hear your thoughts and.
[00:04:03] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. So I teed this one up to you. Of course. I was. I was thinking as we were going through again, this is probably one of my favorite times of the year, is to just kind of focus you on. On. On the king and everything he did for us. But, you know, I always like to start off, like, simple question, right after the tomb, right. Was found empty, what changed in your life? And it's something you kind of should pause and think. And I think about, like, Peter in particular and the disciples, who. They were kind of confused, right? And we get the. The benefit of hindsight. We get to see the whole story. But on that Good Friday, when they watched Jesus go to the cross, they were devastated, they were wrecked. And they went like, hey, we're going to be the next ones dead. And on Resurrection Sunday, early that day, when they got the news that, hey, man, the tomb is empty, it began a transformation. And that's the point. The mission was just getting started. And I think for a lot of us, if we don't pause and kind of take that moment to think, hey, the tomb is empty, Jesus is alive. That is to say, it's a big deal. There is no other religion on the planet where you find this scenario play itself out, and Jesus is alive and there's a mission to be done. So that's what we're going to talk about. What is that mission? What are you supposed to be doing next? And I think about the foundational scripture I would say is First Corinthians 15 and 17. It says, if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile. You are still in your sins. So, yeah, if he didn't get out of that grave, then everything kind of just falls apart. But knowing that he did, you should be transformed. And we have a mission which we're going to talk about here.
[00:05:34] Speaker B: No, that's important because you know what you had to say. They are afraid. Right. It says here in John. John actually has the most about the resurrection in the post resurrection. But it says that they were all assembled. The disciples were assembled. John 2019. They were assembled for fear of the Jews. And that's it. They were terrified. They had seen their leader be crucified and it was. They were afraid they were going to be on the chopping block as well.
But I thought that was.
As I kind of tore that story apart and looked at it, I was kind of thinking about it.
You know, each of the Gospels has just a little bit of an angle on it. And it's. When you think about it, in Jewish law, you have to have multiple witnesses. So the Gospels serve as those witnesses to the Jews. Right. And each one. And as we know, if you have a witness that gets up and says the exact same thing, you know, it doesn't lend credibility, but by having that different little bit of a different view, it does. I thought that was extremely interesting.
[00:06:41] Speaker A: No, that's a great point, Jason. And I think like, so the Monday. So Monday's fast approaching. And I don't mean that just as another day on the calendar is, after all this prep, this time with family, this time of focusing on, you know, Jesus, we're going to go, you know, have a great sermon service at some point this weekend, whenever you choose to go, you're going to go to church. You know, it's going to be packed because we're going to have a lot of our seasonal friends that will show up, right?
[00:07:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:06] Speaker A: You know, choirs are going to be singing Beautiful. You're going to have little programs and tears might even be shed. It's a high emotion. Everyone's feeling charged up and Then boom, Monday comes and there's all kinds of stress that's waiting on Monday. You know, jobs, work. Bill. Frustration is back to normal. But that's not, that's a problem because the resurrection of Jesus and what we're talking about here, it wasn't just this one time thing. And it's easy to kind of be disillusioned and to kind of just start going through the motions like, oh, it's Easter, we're supposed to check this block. No, it was a world altering kind of thing and it should change the way that we live every single day. Luke 24:32 says, were not our hearts burning within us while we talked, while he talked with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us. Men, if your heart is not still burning, if you're not still fired up, you've lost a little bit of the, and you've missed a little bit of what the mission was. You have to keep moving, you have to keep stepping because the King is alive. Right. And we have people that we need to reach and influence in the little spheres of life that we have.
[00:08:06] Speaker B: Yeah. You know, as I thought about this and I kind of was playing it out in my head as I was reading last night and this week, you know, it's, you know, of course Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James that are, that are headed out there and it's, it's before daylight. You know, I thought that was pretty important. But they're headed out to anoint the body, to take care of the body. Right. Everybody else is afraid. And these two ladies are going, right? And they get there and they're thinking, who's going to roll the stone away? Who's going to roll the stone away? For the listeners that don't really realize this, they had put a guard there, they had sealed it. And the way the Roman government works is, you know, it's, it's like any prisoner or anything like that. It's a one for one swap. What we mean by that is if you are guarding a prisoner and that prisoner escapes, you as the guard assume his spot. It's a motivational factor.
[00:09:00] Speaker A: Yeah, that's a big one.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: Somebody's going to be in that tomb. You decide if it's you or the dead guy. Right. And so the guards had a very vested interest in that being closed. But they come up there and it is open. And you know, of course the angels says, hey, I want you to see where he laid. And what's unique is, you know, when you look at that, there's there's two angels on either side, and there's that. That. That blood stain that's in the middle. And if you look at the Ark of the Covenant, it has the two angels on top, and in between, that was where the mercy, the blood was sprinkled.
[00:09:35] Speaker A: Right.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: For the covering of the sins. So the Old Testament Ark of the Covenant was a foreshadowing of what was coming.
[00:09:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:45] Speaker B: And I love it because the. The angel tells them, you know, it's like, hey, he's not here. He's risen. And when they meet, they're the first ones to see Jesus. And they're like, hey, this is it. And go tell the disciples. Go tell the disciples. And Peter, I'll see him in Galilee. Right? So I thought all those things were pretty good.
[00:10:06] Speaker A: No, that's awesome, Jason. That's awesome. And a great, great segue to come to. My next note is Old Peter. Right? So when Jesus. Jesus comes back, he wasn't just, like, hanging out. He didn't go to heaven immediately. There was some work to be done. You know, we see him going back to kind of the start. He was still looking for fishermen, and in particular our good friend Pete. And it was a restoration is what he was doing. The disciples, quite honestly, they. They were pretty down and out to the point. Like you said, they were scared. And from a cultural standpoint, they. They had these two ladies going out and being their advanced party, checking things out because they were terrified. Uh, which when you think about that, again, it's another humiliating factor for them. So Jesus went about the work of restoring them and letting them know the mission hasn't changed. Uh, and especially for Peter, I think about John 20 and 21, it says, as Father has sent me, I'm sending you.
Matthew 28:19 through 20. Go, therefore make disciples of all the nations. The same men who were hiding, you know, hours before behind locked doors. You know, Peter, who had denied Jesus, even had been, you know, just straight humiliated by a young girl. They went on to preach and form what we now know as the Christian church, you know, and on Pentecost, what through the lives were saved. Yeah. So again, it just shows Jesus is in the business of restoration. He is in the business. And he started with himself and proven to the world, as you pointed out, beautifully like that, that great picture. He fulfilled everything. And he gave definitive proof time and time again that I am who I said I am. And. And we have to be about our Father's business.
[00:11:44] Speaker B: You know, when you talk about Pete, and I think it's super important, that. So there's Peter, right? And he says, hey, I'm with you until death. I'm with you until death. I'm with you. And he's like, oh, you're about to get tested. You have boldly stated you're going to step up to the plate and Satan's going to sift you. In other words, you've said it. Satan's eyed you up. Now you're going to step in the ring. He says, but you're going to. When it. When it's time, when it's over, when it's over, you know, like, hey, there is an end time to this. And when it's over. But, you know, and Peter is there, and I think about this in the Lord's supper, and I have to bring. Come back to that in a moment. But when he denies Jesus, he not only denies him, but it says on the third one, and I think it's in Luke, but it says he and Jesus made eye contact, like he looked at Jesus. Jesus kind of looks through that little window and says, I see you. And you.
That's personal.
[00:12:39] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:12:41] Speaker B: In Peter's heart, he. There is no denying I have failed the risen Savior. Right? And it's heartbreaking. It says, him and John race to the. To the tomb. And, you know, John Annotates, yeah, I outran him. But Peter, like, I burst through there because I wanted, you know, you gotta think it's. All of those emotions are coming together in one thing.
[00:13:03] Speaker A: Yeah, no, that's. That's great, Jason, because I think for a lot of us, we. We can relate to Peter, especially as guys, right? There's the bravado, there's Pete that was willing to, you know, go to blows with just about anybody. But what we see, as he gets to the tomb, he still walks away. And I think that's important to note. I think it was like you said that the weight of the emotions, like, hey, everything that he said, and I denied him and he's not here. And I don't. I think Pete walked away thinking, like, I'm not gonna see him. He's not coming back for me. He, you know, and Jesus goes about and restores him, but, you know, for a lot of us, you know, what about us, right? Like, how many times have we been hiding behind something or we had something go wrong and we kind of walked away. We got angry, got bitter, we got hurt. And Jesus is telling us through Peter, really, he's given us another example for. Especially for guys like, hey, I haven't forgot You. Because what Peter did was what a lot of us do. He ran to comfort. I know how to fish. I'm good at fishing. Wasn't so good at this thing about leading people and manages like, no, you aren't. This. This is not you. You had a mistake, but it's not over. The Resurrection is a beautiful picture because it's about restoration and getting on with the work.
[00:14:14] Speaker B: Sometimes. Sometimes you got to. Irish boxer, right? And I say that phrase because as someone who is like 99.9999, except for that little bitty whatever percentage is Irish, right? Like you. You got. Sometimes you're going to get a hit. You're just going to get a hit. We're good at taking hits. We're not good at dodging, but you got to keep going.
[00:14:37] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:14:38] Speaker B: And that's what Jesus is. Is really with Peter. And I love that entire process of. Of the restoration. You know, he. When he goes to him, because it is very personal because his guys were like, man, I failed. Let me just kind of fade away into the shadows. And that's what Peter was going to do. And he says he meets him on the shores of Galilee. And, you know, it says, Peter jumped in. Peter jumps in. He. Lieutenant Dan's it to get there, which is what we should be doing.
[00:15:05] Speaker A: Absolutely. We should have that passion, which pride.
[00:15:08] Speaker B: Aside, this is what it's about. And it's a personal time. Right. And he goes through those questions and, like, the three questions, just like he did when he denied him three times. But he also, when he talks to him, you know, and this is something that Tyson pointed out to me is it's the same kind of fire. It's a coal fire. It's not a wooden fire. It's a coal fire. And it's called out like that because that's the one that. That's the particular type of fire that Peter was warming himself by when he was denying it. Smells different.
And, you know, Jesus is. Is. Look, not only did I make. Yes, 100, I made eye contact with you.
Don't. Don't think I didn't. Not only did I predict it, I saw you. We're going to kind of recreate this to bring you back into the fold.
[00:15:54] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
No, that. That's good, Jason. And I think that, you know, what I would say kind of, you know, next is, is Jesus then moves as we look at this Resurrection story, and we're kind of walking it through with guys as, okay, now it's time to start being practical and living. You Know, I restored you. You're good. You cried. We had some fish. We're all good. Now, now, now it's time to put you on your big boy pants and get to work. There's a boldness and security, you know, Acts 4 and 13, kind of where we see now the apostles, the church is starting to form when we get to this particular scripture and it tells us of a group of people. Now let's think about this. The crucifixion, all this stuff with Jesus has just happened in this, in Jewish society, in Israel, like, everyone's kind of reeling. Like, man, there's a lot going on. And then you have Peter, who people probably knew, like, hey, that Peter denied him, and he has to step out public because back then it wasn't social media. You got to go to kind of public square and he starts preaching him and John, you know, and you have to. The lesson I take from that segment of the resurrection story or post resurrection story, which is what we're talking about, is you have to be willing to speak because there's going to be people that pop up in our lives as men. I remember we used to hang out and we used to do 1, 2 and 3. And now you're all on this Jesus stuff, right? And it's that moment, do I shrink away or do you stand bold? And what we know very well from, from the rest of the, of the New Testament, Peter and the apostles, they move out. Forgiveness. Jason alluded to, you know, really well. But that was the other thing. Colossians 3 and 13 says, Forgive as the Lord forgave you. So all these people, all these things that, you know, all. Well, you know, the, the Jewish people, Israel was against Jesus. And really what you see, the disciples, they start with, it was a healing moment. Like, hey, you know, Jesus did come, the Messiah did come. Let's move forward. And, you know, you got to forgive yourself and you got to forgive someone else. And then victory over sin is the last thing I would say. And really having no fear, which goes hand in hand when you're having victory over sin was, you know, Jesus was raised from that. Romans 6 and 4 says that we could have a new life. So the addictions, the pride, a lot of things you see in the disciples, those things that, those little nuances in that story where they were fearful doubting with Thomas, Peter, you know, had really a pride to him. That's why he was, you know, so boastful. All those things. It wasn't the final say. Jesus, in those 40 days, he made all those things like, hey, he put them on the table, that's done with. You're something new. And I get the final say of what your destiny is. And it's the same for us as guys, you shouldn't be afraid because of something you've done. You said Jesus has a mission for you. You just got to step out and do it.
[00:18:33] Speaker B: You know, I think about the, the life altering time of that. Right. We, anyone that's interested, you should absolutely look up the history of the disciples. And they all maintained Jesus rose from the dead all the way up to some pretty gruesome deaths. Right? But as I kind of looked at, you know, what, what was post and so forth, you know, Jesus shows up to the disciples when they're hidden in that room. And there's Thomas and we of course, like typical people, we call him Doubt and Thomas because we always focus on the failure. Thomas was a chosen. Was a chosen. I'm not, let's start with that. And he did some other really, really good things that go beyond just that, that moment. But it's interesting to me that Jesus had his scars when he, the resurrected Jesus had his scars. And I've, I've thought about that. He's got his past injuries. And Jesus doesn't tell us to forget our past injuries, he just tells us to forgive. Right. I thought that was kind of a unique moment for me as I was kind of reading this. But also when you look at the life changing event and this is where as men we have to be this way. John and Peter were good friends. Not because I think their personalities were more, more akin than we'd like to think. Peter was a go getter, a lot of gas, little bit of break. Probably had the physical attributes to back it up, you know, probably so. I mean, he cut that dude's ear off, right?
[00:20:03] Speaker A: Like I got, didn't even blink.
[00:20:05] Speaker B: Didn't even blink. Cut it off. And you know, that's a bold move. That's a bold move. And but you also look at John. John was called the sons, him and his brother. Sons of thunder, right? So you got lightning in one hand, you got thunder in the other, right? Like there's, you choose. They're together, they're together. You know, they are. They're like, let's. I'm tired of these sinners, I'm tired of these gentiles, I'm tired of these Romans. But you look at how John is called the brother of love afterwards, right? Yeah. I mean he got boiled in oil, he got stranded and on The Isle of Patmos. That wasn't a picnic. There wasn't a resort there, that's for sure. No, but he was the brother of love. And I think as we mature as Christians, if you don't mature into that arc of being loving, I don't. I don't get it. And you need to. You need to go back and think about what this means. It's the restoration. He restored Peter. He spent a lot of time restoring John and his men. You need to dig into that and think about it.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: Yeah, no, that was. I mean, it's a great Jason, like. And to kind of. To ride off of what you just said about maturing and moving past where you start. Right. As much as we love relating here on the show and we talk about Pete and that. That is a good point, that he did mature, he did move on beyond just being the strength and the brawn behind everything, you know? And, you know, in a world today that we kind of live in where there's a lot of fear, rage, and hopelessness, we have to kind of mature like that. We cannot allow ourselves to wallow in that. You have to rise above and pull people out, you know, to understand that God wants us to be righteous. And that doesn't mean that you kind of like, to Pete or John like that, hey, man, like, there is a standard and we need to get there. But you have to do it from, like you said, become that brother of love. And that's. That's an important kind of takeaway that they all had to kind of go through their own process as all the disciples, and we get just glimpses of how Jesus is restoring individually. But I'm sure he spent time, like you said, with all of them, and, you know that that's. That's important. Jesus is willing to do the same thing with us today. We just have to open up to him.
[00:22:10] Speaker B: He makes it personal. Right. Like, as we say prayers and we say things, God will reveal himself. You know, like you said, it starts with the word. And, you know, I see little reminders that Jesus is listening to me all the time. You and I talked about it, right? I tried to. When I see them, I definitely try to take note. Hey, I was just praying about that. And, you know, studying statistics when I was in grad school, that horrible time, just the odds are astronomical, right, that a personal something that came out of my prayer life literally is right here. When I see it a couple days later, you know, I think just like. And I'm. I'm going to backtrack A little bit. But as we were kind of reading through this, I was reading through it and something that has really hit me and we talked about it in a couple episodes ago. Go back and, and look at it. Listen to it for everybody. If you don't, if you didn't. But it was talking about the temptation. And Jesus uses a key phrase each time he addresses Satan. He says, you know, don't live by bread alone. And then he tells him, when Satan says, hey, if you'll. If you'll. I'll give you all these kingdoms if you worship me. And he says, get thee behind me, Satan. Well, the next time that phrase is used is in Matthew 16:23, when he tells, When Jesus tells his disciples, I've got to go to the crucifixion. And then the resurrection. And Peter goes far. King James is far be it from, from the Lord. I'm pretty sure I'd have had an emotion, emotional and visceral reaction as well. Right. Like, whoa, stop. But. And he tells it to Peter. And you think about it. We as a society, we focus on the cross. We focus on the, the, the, the passion of the Christ. It's all about the cross. Right. Like, it's all about the beat down and everything else to it. And, and we are naturally drawn to that.
[00:23:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:00] Speaker B: You know, however, Jesus said that's not the focus. The focus is beyond that. The focus is the resurrection.
[00:24:07] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:24:09] Speaker B: And the focus is the restoration that comes from the resurrection.
[00:24:13] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:24:14] Speaker B: And that's, that's the Easter moment. Satan absolutely wants you to get caught up on the cross. It really does. Matter of fact, if, if, if he could have kept Jesus there, he would have, right? Oh, yeah, yeah, he kept it.
[00:24:26] Speaker A: He wasn't defeated there.
[00:24:27] Speaker B: Yeah, but that's, that's not where the victory is. It's like watching the boxing match, and all of a sudden the guy gets knocked down. You're like, oh, that's it. Let me shut it off.
[00:24:37] Speaker A: No, no, no, no, no.
[00:24:39] Speaker B: Lots of time left.
[00:24:40] Speaker A: Lots of time.
[00:24:42] Speaker B: And I think was. As. Guys, not only do we have to look at our own personal restoration, and it is personal. Right. You get your, you get your good buddy, who is your iron sharpening iron. You know, Colby, I'm always very thankful for you as we navigate the life.
Dads and husbands, you know, struggling through it all.
[00:25:02] Speaker A: Yes, sir.
[00:25:03] Speaker B: That, that help you, right? Peter and John, they talked, you know, they did. And, But I do, I think once you, once you accept that forgiveness from Jesus Christ and you become a Christian, it's your Job to get off the X and start going forward. Right.
[00:25:18] Speaker A: I love it.
[00:25:19] Speaker B: Start restoring others.
[00:25:20] Speaker A: I love it. You know, you said something really good is. And I'll just summarize in my own kind of way, is that, you know, but because of the Resurrection, you know, we can all. But no matter where you're at, guys, today, how you're feeling, you can boldly say, as you put your trust into Jesus and he's your Lord and Savior, that you have hope no matter what's going on, not because of what you see. Right? And that's the thing. No matter what you're seeing out there, it doesn't matter that you can still have hope because of who you know you are in him and what he accomplished. And you get to benefit from that. That is the power of the Resurrection. That is what makes the weekend that we just went through, as you listen to this, so powerful, is everything that we're doing now is that you get to be an impact and a restoration force, an influencer, a life bringer, a life changer. Now, because Jesus got up out of that grave and he started restoring people, that is the power of Easter weekend, in my opinion.
[00:26:17] Speaker B: Yeah. For guys out there, if you think, well, I'm beyond it. I just, you know, I'm a bad person. Hey, I gotcha. I was, too. I'm still a bad person. Right. If you read the most profound characters in the Bible, there were some. They. They own territory on the opposite side, Right?
[00:26:34] Speaker A: Like, let's just think about our man David.
[00:26:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Look at. Look at David. Look at Paul.
