[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
Hey, welcome everyone to another episode of the Jonathan Project podcast where iron is sharpening iron. And we take the example of Jonathan and his good friend David as the inspiration for our show. We're helping men navigate the complex world around them. If you would like Jason and me to come out to a men's event business, you have something going on and you listen to the show and found some inspiration, please reach out to us at the Jonathan Project podcast gmail.com Again, the Jonathan Project podcast gmail.com. jason, welcome back. We had a little bit of a break and left season four behind us and now we're into season five, believe it or not.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: That's crazy. No, it was, it was good to have a little bit of a break as you, you know, a lot of the listeners know we took a little vacation time and spring break so got to take off and do our trip. It was we, my family, we went up to Missouri to visit some other family and where son was gifted with a four wheeler which is amazing how much red clay bring back to the house.
So yeah. How about yourself?
[00:01:27] Speaker A: It was good. We, we visited a couple national parks which is kind of a coming into a trend for the family to try to hit a lot of those really under visit places in this wonderful country called America. Like just beautiful, kind of brings you and draws you back as you're in nature as it speaks to that glory of God and spend some quality family time in a place where you can't use your cell phones or electronics because you're so remote. And it was good. So now the bad part on it and for anybody that lives in the state of California that listens to this, that I don't see how you do it. I just don't. Between the taxes and the cost of living, gas.
Wow.
It's a lot, it's.
It's a lot to, to take in but we had a good time and you know, we're back at the grind of, of just daily living so.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: Good, good, good. Yeah.
California is quite expensive.
[00:02:27] Speaker A: Oh my goodness. Let me tell you, it hurt every time we did anything including breathing. I seem like so.
But now. So I'm, I'm glad. Jason, we're here for season five, episode one and this one is, it's a big one, guys. This, this is one you want to really lean into, dig into on your own as I have titled it is understanding the enemy's culture and really that we're going to break down those, those strategies and schemes and really they kind of fall into a couple different Bends, really, of how Satan comes at you and your family and tries to ultimately destroy you and pull you away from. From God.
[00:03:04] Speaker B: You know, I was thinking the other day is anytime you have hard times, right, There's a natural inclination for people to turn on one natural inclination for people to. For division to occur. And it made me stop and think about Satan's original. A lot of his intent is to get to that division, right? Think about it. He divided the angels in heaven. He was cast down. Then he divided Adam and Eve, right. And divided them from God. And then he goes on and on and on as he's headed towards it.
And I was reading during my read through the Bible, I'm in Luke, and it was to the temptation of Jesus, right?
[00:03:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:50] Speaker B: And so when I looked at it, he starts off with. He's tempting him with. With. With bread, right? Then he goes, I'm gonna show you all these kingdoms. And then if you'll. If you'll worship me, you know, or, you know, if you'll do all this, I'll let you have all. Then I want you to cast yourself down and the angels will catch you. Well, then I remembered in first John, that's it. It's the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of the light. Like that is the three. That's. That's the only plays he runs on football field.
Buckets into one of those. And so I thought that was kind of important as I just kind of tore those apart in my head.
[00:04:33] Speaker A: No. Yeah, that's good. And I think I kind of landed on the same spot. And as we always do, you know, as we're doing our individual research over a topic for a show, then we, we circle back together. You know, I. I remember going through the National Intel University when I. When I was still in uniform, a young, young intel guy getting ready to go out and do great things. And in every class, you know, it was. The one thing that was made crystal clear, is if you want to win, you know, in conflict, you better understand your adversary's culture. And what drives them, how do they think? What do they value? Because, you know, if you understand what your enemy is, you can predict and prepare your defenses. So for us as believers, it's really no different. That's what we're talking about here today, is that we're in a war with an enemy that plays absolutely dirty. You know, he lies. He is the father of lies. And he aims to distill, kill, and destroy you and your family. And John. And Jesus says it himself and John 10:10, that the thief comes to steal and to kill and to destroy, but he came to give life and to have it abundantly, you know, So I. Same kind of thing, you know, the number one thing for me was division and then pride and temptation, you know, And Satan's first major strategy is division, to divide and to conquer. And we saw it right out of the gate. Genesis 3, which I would say is the foundational kind of study story, if you want to go back and study this, this topic is you can find all of these strategies in one place. And that was. And it starts right at the beginning. And, you know, he didn't come with a sword. He didn't come with an army. He came with a question. He's like, did God really say, bop, bop, bop? And from there, you know, Eve began to doubt. He began to manipulate. He began to give her pride over what she could be, and he tempted her. All of these major strategies in one tight, succinct place. And it ultimately led to our downfall.
[00:06:25] Speaker B: That's pretty amazing, you know, and it's there. You know, I heard some people, they always go after Adam, they always go after me. But, you know, you got to think about it. That was the genetic. That's. That's one over one, right? Yeah. The best chance we got.
[00:06:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:06:41] Speaker B: And they felt quickly to it. Right.
And I think if we. If we do just kind of take a look at it, there's a reason why everything is written in the Bible. And as I've read through it, there's also. If it's written in there twice, there's a reason.
And I've seen things written in there twice, just a couple of pages apart. And I'm like, well, there's a reason God, he's repeating himself.
So when I was reading through Jesus's temptation and I looked at it, and he's basically trying to create that divide between him and the father. And he's like, man, you're hungry. If anyone has ever been hungry, you're listening here. I imagine we all have, right?
[00:07:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:25] Speaker B: I remember going through some. Some training, and food was not readily available.
It was available to the rest of the military. It was not available to us trainees, right? And you get to be pretty hungry. And he's like, hey, man, just turn this bread into some rocks or turn this bread into some rocks.
That's what I do when I cook.
[00:07:48] Speaker A: There you go.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Turn his rocks into bread. Right? And he's basically telling him, you know what? Your father's not taking care of me. And he tries to create that division. But I love Jesus's response when he's like, hey, man, you shall not live on bread alone. With every word of God.
[00:08:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:05] Speaker B: And he set the foundation for how to be, you know, how to, how to combat that strategy is get into the Word.
You have to know what the Word says. That was Eve. When, when he talked to Eve. Right. Did he really say this? So knowing the Word is kind of the first step against the strategy, if that makes sense.
[00:08:25] Speaker A: No, it absolutely does. You know, Satan. Satan comes to divide us. That's. That is the number one thing, as you said, Jason. And it's to divide us from God, primarily from each other and within the church. And he's, you know, he does a good job of it. I mean, you just have to look around, just listen for about two second. And division is running rampant everywhere. You know, families are in conflict in the church, internally in conflict society and you know, across the world. Everything, it seems like it's just division, division, division, and everyone's going into their own little corners and they're ready to come out swinging. But, you know, Jesus gives the solution to this particular tactic when he says in John 17:20, 21, you know, he talks about the power of unity in. In that, in that little section. And, you know, and in Colossians 3 and 14, we find it again about this concept in this topic above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. When the church, in particular, men under that and who carry a lot of spiritual authority, get into a state where we're being divided, it's like being bedridden. When you're sick, you're absolutely ineffective and you can't be useful. You know, we're not operating in that state that Jesus has called the church and men in particular as spiritual leaders to be, which is to execute selfless love and to take ground back from Satan, you have to be unified. It is the complete opposite of division.
[00:09:54] Speaker B: No, you know, that's as we're kind of sitting here and we're talking about division and how a lot of people don't really realize how. What a tactic that is.
You know, years ago, when I was going through some training, when, you know, George Washington was actually training us up and leading us.
Yeah, well, we were actually in patrolling phase and long story short, we. My little squad had crossed a road. It was, you know, like maybe a cornfield thick over here. We were divided. And that's when the cadre had laid in an ambush for us, and we were divided. It absolutely did not go well for.
Right. Because we were divided. And it's always, it's never just a one punch with Satan, you know, he steps in next it'll be something of the lust of the eyes, right. I love how literally to kind of reiterate that in Luke. He tells him, he's like, come on, I want to show you this kingdom. I want to show you the kingdoms of the earth that are mine. And I'll, you know, they're mine and I can give them to whoever I want to.
And he tells him that. But when you, when you kind of look at it, Jesus says something pretty unique. He says, get thee behind me state. You know, it's, it's written, you shall, you know, you shall worship the Lord thy God, and him only shall thou serve. I heard that phrase another time in the Bible when he's talking to Peter and Peter is telling him, hey, don't. When Jesus says, I got to go to this crucifixion thing, then we're going to get to the resurrection. And he says, peter, get thee behind me, Satan. Until last night when I was reading Toby, I never made those two connections.
Think about that.
The kingdom of God comes through the, you know, it's, it's embodied in the resurrection.
[00:11:50] Speaker A: Fine.
[00:11:52] Speaker B: And in Peter said, let's, let's don't get to the cross, let's don't get to the. Let's don't, let's don't, don't get on the profit. It was good intent, you know, it's out of love, obviously.
But that was another thing that was, that was part of that.
It was one of Satan's strategy.
[00:12:13] Speaker A: No, absolutely. You know, and it kind of that brilliant thought into what, you know, kind of. You led me to think about like my second kind of big topic, which is like that silent killer that is is pride. Right.
You know, 1st Peter 5, 5 says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. And what do you see a lot of times out of division is a lot of proud people running around, you know, and God stands in resistance against, you know, those who are puffed up and self sufficient and unwilling to bend to what's probably the best thing in their life, which is submitting to his will, you know, his oldest lie. You find it in Genesis 3 and 5. You will be like God right, right there out of the gate, like, oh, I want to be proud. Because that is what he wanted. And that's the lie of pride. Every time you start thinking you got this without God, you know, you're stepping into that enemy territory. Jesus warns about it in Luke 18 and 14. Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and who humbles them would be exalted. And I love this quote that I found from C.S. lewis. It says, a proud man is always looking down on things and people. And of course, as long as you're looking down, you can't see what's above. So pride is a big one.
[00:13:26] Speaker B: That's a good. That's a good one. You know, and it literally, you know, at the John 2:16 does say the pride of life. And then, you know, it gets into there as well. When he tells him to cast himself down, you know, he tells Jesus, go ahead and cast yourself down. Those angels. Yeah, go ahead and structure stuff. Show the world who you are. And I think a lot of times is that's a. That's a super big invite for division. It's when your pride is. When people's pride or. Or is brute. Right. Be like God. You'll be like God if you.
You'll be, you know, show people who you are. You know, I gave a lot of thought, especially in the calamity that's kind of going on right now in today's society.
[00:14:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:17] Speaker B: A lot of people like, oh, well, now it's my time.
[00:14:24] Speaker A: Yes, sir.
[00:14:25] Speaker B: There's hurt people be at the demise of others. And that's. That's not what God says. That's the pride of flesh.
Literally, in Proverbs, it says, don't laugh at another's calamity. That's between them and God. Yeah. God has got a goal for that person, and it is to get them to a right relationship.
And, you know, also. And later on in 17, he says, if you're glad at calamities, that doesn't go unpunished. Right. Yeah. So we look at his strategy of creating division and, you know, really poking at people and pulling those threads of the lust of the eyes. The lust. Flesh. And then moving forward and going, what about your pride? Yeah. You know, those are the big three strategies. Think about it. If you knew the other opponent plays on the football field, you knew they're only going to run three plays.
[00:15:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:15:26] Speaker B: You could get ahead.
[00:15:27] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. And. And the good Lord gives us all that we need to get ahead. Right. You know, I think about, you know, in combat, a commander. The worst that you can have in any leader is someone that they can't be told anything. They know. They know everything.
[00:15:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:47] Speaker A: Right. And, you know, a unit that is fragmented is the most vulnerable and it's the same with us as believers. It's the same kinds of things. When Satan can get that wedge in just as much as we're trying to split tree or whatever you're trying to do, he can get that wedge and he's got leverage because then the next thing that's going to inevitably happen, you're going to separate people into two camps, you know, and then everyone's looking at the folks over there pointing that they're wrong and they're over here wrong, and he's got you. And then it's just now have divided the big organization unit and now it gets the individual. I'm going to start picking people off because it's just like watching, as I watch with my kids, the Discovery Channel, you love me. Watching the herds run across the African plains. And it's always that one that was kind of getting a little bit more water for itself and it just doesn't notice till it's a little too late, you know. And then the next thing you know, it's like got something around his neck, a new alligator necklace or something. Right. So it's no different with us. And, you know, if you have that pride, you now you're over here isolated. That is what pride literally does in the spiritual world. It isolates you because God is resisting you, which I can't, I can't imagine how bad that is to have the God of all creation. He's like, okay, I'm going to resist you and the adversaries. Thank you. I'm going to start picking them off. And so, you know, if you are leading, which, you know, a lot of our audiences is men or single moms or whatever is out there. This is something that you really have to tackle is understanding, am I being divided? Am I being tempted? Which temptation just makes sin look really good. That's all it is. Yeah. And am I isolated? You know, because you're in a dangerous spot.
[00:17:25] Speaker B: No, that's a good point. And you know, a lot of people go, well, I'm, I'm divided because they're wrong. That's, that's, that is always the key statement. Well, I'm on the side of right. Let's, let's, let's go back to where Joshua talked over whose side is God on?
[00:17:44] Speaker A: I love it. Yeah. Yeah, he's on nobody's but his.
[00:17:48] Speaker B: That's it. And, and I think about that Christ was a unifier. And whether it's, you know, just, I think about, you know, Matthew being at the table. He was a tax Collector, Right.
He come from the Levi tribe, he's supposed to be a priest. And he says, nah, I think I'm be this tax collector. But yet at the table, Jesus unified all of those disciples through him. Right. And that's a key for division, is it's unification through him. We should all be able to agree as Christians to love one another and be unified under Him. Right. I might not like, I mean, I may disagree with your point of view on several things, but yeah, as a Christian, I have to love you more than I love that division. Right?
[00:18:44] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: I may not like the things you do, I may not appreciate them, I may think some of them are wrong. But I also have to look at you through the lens that Price looks at you.
[00:18:55] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. I think, you know, Jason, a lot of this that you see just going on is it, is people compromising, you know, time and time again, once, once, once Satan has that foothold that you've given him something, something. It could be a hot topic, it could be family members choice on something. Whatever it is, once he's able to divide you now, now it turns into, okay, well, let me expand that territory, you know, let me get you to thinking about all aspects of like, well, if, if you can't trust. And he just twisted just what if you can't trust God about, you know, this going on in your house? You can't trust this. What's going on in your community. Where can you trust God? And it's always that little voice. And you know, you find in Genesis 3, you know, did God really say that? Is God really doing what he's supposed? Is he really going to take care of you? Is he going to really provide for you? Right. You know, that battlefield is the mind. That's his favorite place to come in and start playing. And it's just, it could be that one person that he sends across your path to say, oh man, you know how bad this is gonna be? Or did you hear about that? You know, and then the next thing you know, you're in trouble. But 2 Corinthians 10:5 gives us the counter strategy, which is to take every thought captive. And I know I struggle with this, you know, I'm so quick to let that chain reaction start going. Something happens and then it's, it's instantly on the negative train.
[00:20:23] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:23] Speaker A: And he's, he's just pushing farther away from the hurt until he can get that great shot around your neck.
[00:20:29] Speaker B: Get you a little more water now. I, I think that's, that's a really good point. Now what we're, you know, for all our listeners out there, we're not talking about compromising the Bible, right? Oh, just love people and compromise the Bible. Absolutely not. You can love people who are in the wrong. Right. I mean, Jesus loved us when we were yet sinners. We all love our kids even when they do wrong. I got a garage full of red clay. I still love my son. Right. Do I, do I hate it some days? Yeah. But I also know that, but I also know that my 14 year old is, that doesn't register in his head. Right. Like, because he's 14.
[00:21:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:13] Speaker B: That, that's just a truth in, in our brains are, in our, we're faulty creatures. But it doesn't mean Jesus doesn't love us.
And so as we, we also should love like Christ as well, right?
[00:21:28] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:21:29] Speaker B: And I, I love how you said that. You know, the battlefield mine. And it made me immediately think about. This story's been played out. It was played out in Joe, Joe's life. Left. Right. Everybody got took. The wife was there.
And I believe her recorded words are, why don't you curse God and die?
[00:21:52] Speaker A: That's something pretty rough.
[00:21:55] Speaker B: I can translate that into modern day term. I'm gonna leave you alone for a little bit.
You go ahead and take care of yourself, you know.
[00:22:05] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:22:06] Speaker B: There's a loaf in a tree.
She's telling it. Do something that God takes your life. Yeah, that. Can you imagine the divide that caused? Yeah.
[00:22:18] Speaker A: You know, I, I again. And we always talk about these. There's, we get, we get those glimpses and I think people can look at these stories in the Bible, like, oh man, this is, this is so high and above. But they're, they're humans. These are, these are people just like us. So I can only imagine the conversation with Mrs. Job and, and Job. I can only imagine some conversations with Adam and Eve as they were over a roaring campfire outside of the garden. Like, yep, that, that went sideways. Right.
[00:22:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:45] Speaker A: But again, it's just that it's the element of division that, that creeps up in there. It's that pride. Right. And you know, when those things show up in your mind that, that battlefield, you have to one arm yourself with scripture, like. And that's what you see, as Jason points out in the, in, in Jesus, temptation. He doesn't come at him with, you know, legions of angels or something dramatic. He just turns the word against him. He's like, man won't live by bread alone. Boom. Right? And when Satan comes at us like oh, God is not going to take care. He's not going to provide. Like, no, you know, Jeremiah 29:11. I know the plans that he has for me are good. To prosper me, not for harm. You have to know and be rooted in that scripture. You have to avoid debating temptation, you know, just reject it. James 4 and 7, you can't get into the debate because that's what you see. Adam and Eve, they're going back and forth, and Satan's like, oh, I got you.
[00:23:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:23:36] Speaker A: You know, and then confess your sins. You know, that's how you win that battle in your mind.
Yeah, man. Like, you got to be prepared.
[00:23:44] Speaker B: You know what's amazing? And this is the way. This is the way the world works. This is the way Satan works. He absolutely tempted Adam and Eve, all right? They eat the fruit, get out. They didn't. They probably didn't have a campfire the first night, Right. Because that probably took some effort.
But he left them right after that. He's like, I got you now. I'm done with you. And he just moves on to the next objective. Right. Things of this world will leave you.
They're gonna leave you empty. Right? He does. This world offers cravings and not fulfillment. And that's what Satan does. He goes, man, that looks good. Let's try that. Oh, it's a. It's a one way. It's a one way door out of eaten. My bad. Have a nice life. Now I've got you.
[00:24:32] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:33] Speaker B: And, you know, I thought a lot about this. In the very first temptation, Jesus says, hey, man doesn't live on, you know, bread, but on every word, God. A lot of people go, well, I don't know Scripture well enough. Well, I don't know. I can't remember all the verses. I don't memorize verses. Let's. Let's pause for a moment because you're in a struggle now. I'm gonna let you know, Colby, you're an officer. I'm an nco.
[00:25:03] Speaker A: I was in another language.
[00:25:04] Speaker B: I'm gonna let you in on a.
And the reason. Whenever I had to give them, you know, they have the checklist that you follow. Right.
And nobody does that. I'm. I'm tracking. They don't. Unless you're a robot. But what we do is we memorize those key components and we absolutely understand the overall intent. Right.
[00:25:29] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:29] Speaker B: The way it is. So don't be dismayed or don't be upset that you can't remember what Luke 4. 32 says. And I just pulled that up because my Bible, it literally says. And they were astonished at his doctrine. Okay. You can tell. I can't see it. They're astonished. As a doctor, which is kind of funny that we talk about it.
Don't get. Get to the intent. Right. If you don't know enough verbatim, get to the intent. Stick to the original thing, that God loves you, that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again. Yeah, that's. That's it. Right. And whosoever in John 3:16 that whosoever.
[00:26:14] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:15] Speaker B: Big news world. That's everybody.
[00:26:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:18] Speaker B: Everybody gets a shot at the golden ticket.
We don't get to judge who goes into heaven.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: No. And it's for the best that we don't because I don't know if we would get in ourselves if that was the case, you know, but, you know, as we're talking about now, we're really talking about that counter strategy, that defense strategy for yourself, you know, and how do you fight back and win? And Jason gave some, you know, some really ground truth is. Yeah. You don't need to run around with every single word of the Bible because you can't. Right. Like, you know, tucked away. But you do need to understand those concepts and where you can get that help and defeat what's going on. You know, faith, believing God's promises over Satan's lives. It's. It boils down to, you know, something that simple prayer. We've talked about that several times and I've equated prayer as. It's a spiritual nuclear weapon. It is. It is so powerful and effective. It's that lifeline. It's the red phone to call and receive God's power to invite him in as he won't override your free will. If you stand there and say, I don't need help, he's going to like, okay. Again, resisting the proud. You can't be proud. God's word, it's a sword, you know, for. Against those deceptions. It carves it apart. Obedience is really the first key. If Adam and Eve would have been obedient, all those schemes and trying to pull them away so he could isolate them through pride and all these other things, they would have fell apart. You know, it crushes Satan's footholds just by being obedient. A community. The whole thing about the Jonathan Project and there's a lot of other things out there. Church, you can't do life alone. As a believer, God wants us to understand that life is a team sport. And iron sharpens iron for. For the Guys out there, and the ladies, too. Proverbs 27:17. The blood of Jesus. What Jesus went to the cross and did, and what he got up out of that grave, that is the ultimate defeat for Satan. And through him, right, all things, we get all of our strength, and we can prosper through him against those attacks. So, you know, don't wait until you're in a battle to try to get dressed up. You got to suit up now, because if you don't have a plan, getting punched in the face ain't going to generate one either.
[00:28:32] Speaker B: Yeah, when you're missing some teeth, it doesn't. It's not always the best time to come up with a plan. You know, I thought a lot about that. You said, you know, church being part of other believers, you know, being in fellowship with other believers. The truth is, I have a fire pit out back, and I use this example. I'm always stoking the fire. I'm always pushing those coals back to the center, because when you pull those coals out, they'll die out. When you separate that fire, it dies out. Right. But if I push it together, everybody gets warm. And that's how we are as believers.
We use the term iron sharpening iron. Because the two of you are going to come together, and you're going to. You're going to work together, and you're going to scuff out those rough edges, and that's absolutely important. You've got to be. Both of you have to be grounded in the Word, and it's okay. A lot of people, their pride gets in the way, Colby, and they go, man, I just don't know enough to speak up. So I'm just not going to ask a question because I don't want to feel stupid. That gets into that pride, you know, the whole prod piece right there. Right. Pride of life. I don't want to look stupid. Let me lean in and tell everybody a unique phrase, man. I don't know enough about that, but I need to look it up. Let's talk about it. Can you show me where that is?
Right. Yeah. I've read the Bible through several times. Do I remember it all? No, absolutely not. It's a wonderful. This scripture, to me is wonderful. It's got so much depth into it.
[00:30:13] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: And, you know, this Colby and a couple other guys who listen, I'll get lost down a rabbit hole, you know, so I don't make a lot of forward progress. Make a lot of, you know, down and in progress. But it happens. Just is being humble and going, man, I need to know more about this.
[00:30:33] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:30:33] Speaker B: And, yeah, let's. Let's work through it together.
I think those are. Those are big things. That's unity, right? Nobody wants somebody who's so prideful, and you're creating that own division yourself.
[00:30:45] Speaker A: So, no, I love it. That's a great way to move us out of season five, episode one is that recognition that unity is what it's all about. Because we're two or more gathered.
